Architcture

RascardThe typical buildings most often found in the alpine area combine both domestic and work areas.
These buildings, generally of a regular form, are built on more than one floor: the barn at the bottom, the living area and its surrounding rooms on the first floor, the storage on the top floor alongside the hay loft. Normally they contain an underground cellar.

Due to the steepness of the terrain, access to the rooms is by one or more sets of stairs on the outside. Building materials and decoration depend primarily on the rooms' function and reflect the social status of the owner.

The ground floor, underground on two or three sides, is usually made from stone and concrete and utilises the typical barrel vault construction. To improve the domestic space, the first floor was usually painted with lime.
Wood was often used in parts of the building that required ventilation, such as the hay loft and the storage area, and was used to add decoration to the roof. The roof covering is made of flag stones.

Rascards

Distinctive local buildings, constructed using long wooden beams, supported at the ends by stone pillars, typically in the shape of a mushroom. These stone pillars reach from the ground floor or the stone basement (which was used to store the sheaves and afterwards threshing of the cereals).

Grenier

Constructed of wood and generally organised on two levels, one on top of the other. The bottom half is underground, made of concrete, and used as a cellar where potatoes and cheese was stored. Inside the granary, as well as grain, rye bread, clothing and other goods were stored. Compared to the Rascards, more regularly-sized wood was used in the Greniers, to avoid leaving spaces and prevent the incursion of animals, and protect the foodstuffs inside.
