Pontboset - The Town

Pontboset

A welcoming and tranquil village in the middle mountains, situated at a height of 780 m..
The village clings to the slopes of the mountain and at the bottom, not far away from the town centre, flows the dramatic Ayasse torrent, which over the centuries has eroded the rocks, forming steep canyons and pools of water.
The village is surrounded by beautiful dense chestnut woods but the historical centre and the scattered hamlets surrounding it are the principal attractions.
Entering the village you will find Gom Chapel, dated 1727, which contains many paintings. In a more predominant position, is the interesting parochial church dedicated to San Grato, dated 1624.
An attractive pedestrian street goes through the village among typical stone and wood houses and fountains.
It's also interesting to visit the mountain villages on the right hand side of the River Ayasse, such as Crest and Fournier.
The sporting activities available in the district and in the surrounding area are: in winter, excursions with snow-shoes, and in the Champorcher Resort, downhill skiing, sci alpinismo and cross-country skiing. In the milder time of year, walking and trekking, cycling, and traditional bowls (bocce) .
Accommodation, characteristic and welcoming, offers visitors a pleasant stay, and the shops provide local products.
Interesting traditional festivals such as the procession to Retempio Sanctuary take place alongside others that are more recent, developed to help the visitor discover the landscape, its inhabitants and their traditional costumes and typical gastronomy. Every year sporting competitions are held, among them the kayak and skyrace events.
Don't miss a little stop going towards Frontière, close to the bridge over the River Ayasse, where you can enjoy the play of the waters.
